A Glimpse of the Street Parking Payment Scene in Malaysia

The Street Parking Scenario in Malaysia

Living in one of the countries with the busiest traffic, car drivers in Malaysia often face the headache of finding a parking space during peak hours. Even when we finally manage to find a parking spot, we still must experience the frustration of finding a parking meter or payment machine, or a shop where the pre-paid parking tickets are available to paying the parking fee.

How many times has that led us to skip paying for parking, only to constantly worry about coming back to find a compound ticket slipped between our windshield and wiper after a quick errand, groceries shopping, picking up takeaways from the restaurant, and more?

Gone are the days where we used to see coin-operated parking meters on the streets. Recent years, we have witnessed the introduction of pre-paid parking tickets. The government has also implemented smart parking system, enabling cashless and touchless parking fee payments. Since October 2020, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) announced that roadside parking within its jurisdiction will only accept cashless payments.

Parking Fee Going Online

This shift towards online parking fees brings convenience to car drivers. No more searching through our pockets for coins or spare change, pressure when we find out we do not have sufficient coins, or worse, not having cash at all.

With parking fee going cashless and touchless, paying for parking is now hassle-free and time saving.

Solution for Online Parking Payment

The introduction of online parking payment has paved the way for parking apps. Payment can now be done at the tip of our fingers, via mobile applications and e-wallets.

Despite the abundance of parking app available, different apps are designed to support only specific areas. For car drivers who travel to different places frequently, they may still need to install more than one app.

Addressing this pain point, Touch ‘n Go eWallet becomes the first eWallet in Malaysia to offer comprehensive features within a simple app, providing complete coverage for on-street parking in both Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. In a recent announcement on the expansion of on-street parking coverage, eWallet users can now conveniently make payments at more areas under the total 19 enabled councils to date. We are also aiming to provide nationwide on-street parking coverage in the immediate future.
